If you are maybe wondering why despite the products you are using to treat your acne it still keeps coming back. I also wondered that too. But so far from what I have learnt, I’ll share it with you in this article
As someone who has struggled with acne and has successfully managed acne, here are some of the mistakes you might be making that is increasing your acne.
NUMBER
#1: Using a vitamin C serum
As an acne prone person, you should not be using vitamin
C serum in your skincare routine, let me explain why.
Vitamin C is known to have a low PH of 3.5 or lower which
is quite acidic, causing irritation and inflammation, some vitamin C serums
contain oils or ingredients that can clog pores which in turn will add to your
acne.
This was one of the mistakes I made in my acne journey
that is why I am sharing this with you so you do not make the same mistake.
However, each person’s skin is different hence may react differently.
Suitable
Alternatives
· Niacinamide
serums are good for acne and inflammation reduction
· Salicylic
acid; this could be in the form of a face wash
· Hyaluronic
acid serums are good for hydration
If at all you are going to incorporate vitamin C into your skincare routine, you should first check in with your dermatologist for approval before using, or start with low concentrations (5%-10%) and monitor your skin’s response then adjust or discontinue if irritation occurs.

#2: Eating foods that trigger acne
I know there are a lot of people guilty of this mistake.
I too am guilty. But there are certain foods that trigger this acne and it may
be different for each person but I’ll list a few. Identify your trigger and
caution your consumption of such food.
· Dairy
products (milk, cheese, etc): Lactose intolerance can lead to inflammation and
hence acne.
· Foods
with high sugar: Foods that contain high sugar leads to insulin resistance,
inflammation, and increased androgen hormones
· Processed foods: Some of the products contained in these foods stimulates inflammation
· Fried
foods: These foods are rich in Omega-6 which promotes inflammation, hence lead
to acne
Now a lot of these foods are not exactly easy to just cut
off from your diet immediately, it’s okay. Take it slow and gradually try to
reduce your intake of such products and replace them with foods that will help
manage acne.
Foods that help manage acne
- Fresh Vegetables
- Fresh
fruits
- Steel-cut
oats

#3: Inconsistent skincare routine
You already have products that you are using for your
acne? If not, I have a post where I covered the 4 things I wish I knew while dealing with acne and there I talked about the products I used that helped me
clear my acne.
Now with that being said, to see any visible change or
progress to permanently clear your acne is consistency. Those acne will most
likely keep showing up on your face if you are not actively taking care of it.
Creating your skincare routine in the right order and
sticking to it will help you not just see changes in the condition of your
acne, it will also help you keep having a smooth clear skin.
